QLC flash memory hardware that outperforms TLC: 100TB capacity

Date:2016-08-11

Even though TLC flash memory has been the most popular product among SSD flash memories in the market, it still leaves a bad impression on many people with poor performance and reliability. However, TLC is advantage to its low cost and large capability which is superior to SLC and MLC. Whats more, QLC flash memory is being researched. While TLC flash memory makes is SSD with 10TB capability, what QLC makes is counted by 100TB and its P/E cycles decrease by two thirds.

Facebook has talked about 100TB SSD with QLC Flash Memory

Facebook has shared their point of view about data memory on the recent Flash Memory Summit, including the four different ways of storage in the picture: NVM, AVA, Lightning and WORM. WORM represents write once and read many which means this sort of storages does not require much on writing endurance.

According to Pcper.com, WORM relies on QLC flash memory. We all know that the cell memory of QLC is four bit of data with 16 electrical potential changes. It means that the capability of QLC is larger and it’s harder to control its voltage.

The capacity of WORM is up to 100TB, almost ten times of that of the maximum of TLC. However, its writing endurance decreases to approximately 1000times which is also one third of that of TLC.

Moreover, Facebook also shares the participants with the Intel Optance hard disc which is operated based on the 3D XPoint Flash memory of Intel and Micron. Checked by RocksDB test, it is proved to be more capable than three times of P3600 hard disc while the delay is only 10% of P3600.
